March 17th: Big Free-tailed Bat (Nyctinomops macrotis)

Big is right, With a 17 inch wing span the Big Free-Tailed Bat is the largest of it’s genus, It is one of the few bats species with an echolocation call audible to humans as you can hear here. Almost sounds like a small dog barking! They commonly seek out large beetles and moths to support their large size and powerful flight. They are known to be preyed upon by another nocturnal hunter, the owl.
